Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. According to the reports from Netherlands, the Red Devils are preparing a bid for the 24-year-old.
Arsenal were linked with a move for Martinez earlier in the summer. But the Gunners have faced a setback in the pursuit as it was thought the Argentine defender would remain at Ajax, especially with Jurrien Timber being linked with a move away from Amsterdam amid interest from Manchester United.
United could hold an edge over Arsenal in a direct battle for Martinez. The 24-year-old has worked under Ten Hag for three years and would bed in well with his philosophy at United. Moreover, Martinez is a versatile player and can play as a defensive midfielder. He is a leader at the back and could completely transform United’s defence for years to come.
Manchester United, though, are ready to make a lucrative offer for the Argentine, who has enjoyed stellar success since joining Ajax in the summer of 2019. In just three years, Martinez has racked up 118 competitive appearances for the Dutch club, establishing himself as one of the top defenders in his country in the process.
A few Premier League clubs will rival United
According to the earlier reports, Arsenal are leading the chase to sign Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, with the defender intent on leaving Amsterdam this summer. However, the Gunners are not alone in the race to sign the 24-year-old, and Ajax are aware of further strong interest. Fellow Premier League sides Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham are keeping a close eye on the situation, while Barcelona and Inter are also in the mix.
Newcastle and Spurs have already failed in bids to sign left-sided defenders so far this month. The Magpies have failed in their late bid to beat West Ham to Rennes’ Nayef Aguerd, while Tottenham target Alessandro Bastoni is set to stay at Inter.
Arsenal will submit a new offer soon
Arsenal is seriously interested in signing the defender, and the media are reporting that Ajax has rejected an opening bid of 30 million euros. Arsenal is set to return with a new offer for Martinez, who has a contract with Ajax until the summer of 2025.
Martinez has been with Ajax since 2019 and has become a key player in Amsterdam at centre-back. The 24-year-old was named Ajax Player of the Season recently, but the Argentinian may be on his way out of the club.
