Paris Saint-Germain have drawn level on points with Manchester United and RB Leipzig in Group H of the 2020-21 Champions League following a 3-1 win at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
The visitors were ahead inside six minutes when Neymar tracked down Kylian Mbappe’s deflected effort to volley past David de Gea from a tight angle.
Neymar was the quickest to react to Mbappe’s 20-yard strike that looped up off Victor Lindelof.
Fellow Brazilian Fred was fortunate not to be shown his marching orders on 20 minutes after replays showed the Manchester United midfielder leaning his head into Leandro Paredes, who duly threw himself to the ground.
Referee Daniele Orsato from Italy only showed Fred a yellow card after consulting with VAR.
We were level after half when Marcus Rashford’s tame effort took a big deflection off Danilo to divert past Keylor Navas.
Anthony Martial blazed a sitter over the bar inside the first four minutes of the restart after being set up on a plate by Marcus Rashford.
Less than 10 minutes later we were left wondering how we weren’t ahead. Edinson Cavani’s lob beat Navas but came back off the face of the crossbar. Bruno Fernandes unselfishly set up Martial, only for the French striker’s effort to blocked by a lunging Marquinhos.
Marquinhos would prove to undo us at the other end too as he poked PSG into a 2-1 lead from close range after a corner had ricocheted around the box. The corner had been forced by a remarkable save from de Gea to deny Mitchel Bakker.
Fred received his second yellow card 20 minutes from time for a lunge inside his own half after a heavy touch saw the ball get away from him.
PSG wrapped the game up on a stoppage time counter-attack as we’d gone in search for an equaliser that would have booked our place into the second round. Rafinha set up Neymar for a tap in from close range.
