Manchester United bounced back from our defeat in Turkey three weeks ago to thump Istanbul Basaksehir 4-1 at Old Trafford this evening.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring in seven minutes with a stunning half volley on the edge of the box.
The game was put to bed 12 minutes later when goalkeeper Mert Gunok flapped at a cross to allow the Portuguese superstar to tap home from close range.
Marcus Rashford won a penalty 10 minutes before the break despite a lengthy check from VAR. The England international picked himself up to convert our third.
The visitors scored a consolation 15 minutes from time when Deniz Turuc’s free kick from out wide managed to beat David de Gea.
Daniel James added our fourth in stoppage time.
We now need a point against either Paris Saint-Germain or RB Leipzig to reach the knockout stage.
Here are my player ratings from Manchester United 4-1 Istanbul Basaksehir:
David de Gea 6 – Didn’t have a lot to do and arguably should have saved the direct free kick from which we conceded.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6 – Didn’t have much to do defensively up against Nacer Chadli, but didn’t get forward as often as would have expected given our dominance.
Victor Lindelof 7 – Not too busy and played an excellent raking long ball to Marcus Rashford which led to our penalty. Given a breather at half-time.
Harry Maguire 6 – Beaten in the air by Demba Ba but fortunate the striker wasted an excellent headed opportunity inside the six-yard box. The opposition had a few chances in the first half and then in the final 15 minutes after scoring their first.
Alex Telles 8 – Lost count of the number of crosses the left-back put in the box in an exciting attack performance. Edin Visca was lively down the right for Istanbul though, but resorted to long range efforts. One did hit the top of the crossbar late on though.
Donny van de Beek 9 – Looked after the ball well, started a number of attacks from central midfield. Some well-weighted passed, particularly with the several breaks we had in the final 10 minutes.
Fred 6 – Had a tough time, particularly in the final 15 minutes as Istanbul took the game to us. Did see more touches than any other player though, as reported by Manchester United 365.
Marcus Rashford 8 – An excellent hour in attack. Arguably should have scored in the opening two minutes but did win and score the first-half penalty to make it 3-0.
Bruno Fernandes 9 – A superb opening goal and gifted the second. Another cracking performance from Bruno Fernandes, who was given a rest for the final half hour.
Anthony Martial 6 – Was quite quiet out on the left wing and never looked like scoring. Created nothing.
Edinson Cavani 7 – Held the ball up well when he had it but didn’t see too much and never looked like scoring.
Axel Tuanzebe (45 mins) 6 – Had a busy second half as we conceded a lot of shots in both halves.
Brandon Williams (33 mins) 6 – Replaced Alex Telles as part of a triple substitution but didn’t have much to do in defence and didn’t do anything of note in attack.
Daniel James (33 mins) 5 – Opportunities are becoming few and far between now and Daniel James had done little to suggest Ole should change anything in the near future prior to scoring our fourth on a stoppage time counter-attack.
Mason Greenwood (33 mins) 7 – Lively performance; Mason Greenwood really wanted to get on the scoresheet after replacing Marcus Rashford down the right wing. A well-weighted pass to assist our fourth. Denied by the legs of Mert Gunok with the final chance of the game.
Nemanja Matic (9 mins) N/A – Replaced Anthony Martial as the boss felt we were hanging onto our two-goal lead prior to the final 10 minutes.
