Manchester United’s 2019-20 UEFA Europa League campaign came to an end at the semi-final stage on Sunday night as we were beaten 2-1 by Sevilla in Germany.
The Spanish La Liga side headed into the game unbeaten in a club record 19 consecutive games and having not conceded a goal in more than seven hours.
Bruno Fernandes ended that run from the penalty spot in the ninth minute after Marcus Rashford was fouled when attempting a shot on goal.
The Portuguese superstar’s penalty itself is a joy to watch in the video below and simply impossible to stop.
Unfortunately, we failed we capitalise on our lead. Fred had an excellent opportunity in the 14th minute but fired wide after Fernandes had won the ball back in Sevilla’s half to start the counter attack.
David de Gea denied Lucas Ocampos from a tight angle two minutes later. Sevilla found their equaliser in the 26th minute though as Suso was left unmarked at the back post to finish into the near corner. Brandon Williams had been too central.
Anthony Martial fired a decent opportunity over the bar, whilst Rashford and Fernandes both had long range efforts comfortably palmed away by Bono in the Sevilla goal.
The goalkeeper made an excellent save to deny Mason Greenwood in the opening 60 seconds of the second half and then stopping Martial’s effort three minutes later.
It was a frustrating night for our forwards as Anthony Martial was thwarted one-on-one by Bono again just three minutes after his first effort.
We paid the penalty 12 minutes from time as neither Victor Lindelof nor Aaron Wan-Bissaka picked up Luuk de Jong in the penalty area. The former Newcastle United striker had a simple volley from close range to give Sevilla the lead, ending his personal goal drought.
The Spanish side will take part in their sixth Europa League final on Friday 21 August against the winner of Internazionale-Shakhtar Donetsk.
