Former Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes has joined French Ligue 1 outfit Lille on a free transfer since leaving us at the start of the month when his contract expired.
It had been reported that the 19-year-old wanted more guaranteed first-team football to stay at Old Trafford and refused to extend his deal beyond 2020 as a result.
Gomes has now moved to Lille but will be immediately loaned out to Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit Boavista, who just finished the 2019-20 campaign in 12th out of 18 teams.
He originally joined our youth academy at the age of six before making his first-team debut 10 years later.
There’s no doubt that the highly-rated teenager can be a first team player for Boavista, but it certainly comes as a bizarre career move.
It will be interesting to see if full details are ever revealed as to why Angel Gomes never stayed with Manchester United, particularly as we could have loaned him out for next season just as his new employers have.
Lille themselves finished fourth in the cancelled 2019-20 Ligue 1 campaign and will play UEFA Europa League football next season.
