Manchester United’s hopes of a top four finish were aided on Sunday when Leicester City were hammered 3-0 away to Tottenham Hotspur.
The result leaves us only below the Foxes on goals scored in the Premier League table, with us having a game in hand. Chelsea in third are just one point above the pair of us, though also have a game in hand on the East Midlands club. That is away to Liverpool on Wednesday.
This means that we would move above Leicester with just a point at home to West Ham United on Wednesday. We’re actually very short odds with the bookmakers to take all three points from this game, with the best odds currently going at 1/4, according to BettingSpesialisten.
The Hammers are all but save for another season following their 3-1 win over Watford on Saturday, leaving them six points and 14 goals above the drop zone with two games to play.
Victory for us midweek would give us a tidy lead over Leicester, but unless we thrash the East London club, it’s unlikely to make much of a difference in the head-to-head battle with Leicester. We’d likely still need to avoid defeat at the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season.
However, three points could lift us above Chelsea going into the final day of the season as they have a tough trip to Anfield on the same night. Should Frank Lampard’s side pick up a win at the champions they would be guaranteed Champions League football next season. Anything less would allow us to move above them going into the final game.
The Blues then host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend. The West Midlands club themselves are two points behind Tottenham Hotspur in sixth and with a game in hand. So Nuno’s side are unlikely to roll over in West London.
Either way, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Manchester United are in an excellent position to qualify for Champions League football next season…
