Manchester United are being linked with a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez once again. We have been linked with a move for the Spanish international in the past.
The 25-year-old is three years into his five-year deal at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium and has a staggering €150 million (£128m) release clause written in.
However, whilst that fee is very unrealistic, Spanish outlet AS (via TeamTalk) are reporting that Atletico Madrid would be willing to accept half the price, €75 million (£64m), due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
It is being reported that Atleti are being greatly affected financially by the spread of the coronavirus. France have already confirmed the cancellation of this season’s Ligue 1, and it is expected the same could happen with Spain’s La Liga. No television revenue for the final quarter of the season would be a huge blow to many Spanish sides.
Saul had scored four goals in 37 appearances in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side this season prior to the postponement in March. Atletico Madrid were also sat down in sixth and risked missing out on Champions League football next season were the Spanish authorities able to conclude the 2019-20 season.
It’s not yet known what will happen with the remainder of the 2019-20 English Premier League season but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still expected to have transfer funds ahead of next season. A central midfielder is one position the boss will likely target.
At a price of £64 million, Saul could certainly be an attractive player for us this summer. He is a playmaker in the middle of the park, capable of playing out on the left and scored the goal that beat Liverpool in the first leg of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League second round tie this season.
