Manchester United had no problems progressing to the last 16 of the 2019-20 Europa League with a 5-0 thrashing of Belgian Pro League A leaders Club Brugge at Old Trafford this evening.
The result gave us a 6-1 aggregate win to put us into tomorrow’s draw for the next stage.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot, five minutes after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men. Odion Ighalo and Scott McTominay added to the score to kill the game off before the break.
Fred scored a brace in the final 10 minutes to give us the emphatic scoreline that we deserved on the night.
Here are my player ratings from Manchester United 5-0 Club Brugge:
Sergio Romero 6 – The Argentine goalkeeper had a quiet night as the opposition offered no threat to our goal.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7 – Didn’t get forward a much as expected from right-back but kept Hans Vanaken quiet down his flank.
Eric Bailly 7 – Two starts and two clean sheets for Eric Bailly this season as our defence had an easy night.
Harry Maguire 8 – Seemed keen to get among the goals but in the end failed to test Simon Mignolet with any of his three efforts.
Luke Shaw 8 – Bombed forward from left-back and saw a lot of the ball in the opposition half. Neither Percy Tau or Krepin Diatta offered any threat up against Luke Shaw.
Scott McTominay 8 – Looked after the ball very well, starting attacks. Got on the scoresheet himself too.
Fred 9 – Excellent performance from the Brazilian who continues to get better in a Manchester United shirt. Prior to added a late brace of his own, Fred had also setup a goal and put a few crosses into the box. Saw more touches of the ball than any other player, rarely giving it away.
Juan Mata 8 – A really effective game out wide as Juan Mata saw a lot of the ball, setting up a goal and creating a number of chances from open play and set pieces.
Bruno Fernandes 7 – Scored the opener and forced a couple of saves out of the Belgian side’s goalkeeper. Ambitious in his passing but didn’t register an assist.
Daniel James 6 – Very quiet down the left wing as Luke Shaw saw more of the ball out wide in the first half than Daniel James, who was replaced at half-time. Failed to test Simon Mignolet with a number of efforts during his 45 minutes on the pitch.
Odion Ighalo 8 – Led the line well and good to see him get on the scoresheet again. Odion Ighalo started in place of the injured Anthony Martial and could feature on Sunday as a result.
Tahith Chong (45 mins) 6 – Fairly quiet second half after replacing Daniel James. Did get an assist in his only notable contribution.
Jesse Lingard (27 mins) 7 – Energetic introduction and registered an assist. Jesse Lingard seemed keen to get on the scoresheet but failed to find the target with his three efforts.
Mason Greenwood (20 mins) 5 – Didn’t do much of note with a simple passing game.
