Tottenham defender still on Man United’s January radar

Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho wants his Premier League side Manchester United to agree on a reduced-fee deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld in the winter transfer window.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan head coach identified Belgium international defender as a top transfer target last summer window, but the side baulked at Spurs £75 million asking price.

Jose Mourinho subsequently criticised the Red Devils transfer dealings in the summer as only Brazil international midfielder Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant arrived at Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea head coach wants to add some more attacking firepower to his already star-studded team, but a top-class centre-half is at the top of his rader.

Despite missing out on Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld in the summer transfer window, the Evening Standard report Jose Mourinho is still a big fan of the 29-year-old central defender and is ready to lure him to Old Trafford.

Manchester United are well aware the Belgian’s service could be secured for only £25 million next summer window and this, it is suggested, could provide an opportunity for a major compromise between the two Premier League sides.

Asked about the Red Devils nervous start to the current league season, Manchester United Chief Ed Woodward said the team remain well-positioned on the pitch in the UEFA Champions League, although the Premier League giant have had a mixed start to their domestic League campaign, the team and the Portuguese tactician are united and in their stance to regain the club’s momentum in the English Premier League.
