Manchester City were 3-1 winners in the derby on Sunday as Manchester United drop 12 points behind the league leaders and find ourselves chasing a top four finish for the remainder of the season.
David Silva smashed Pep Guardiola’s side ahead as early as the 12th minute as they took the game to us from the start.
It wasn’t until three minutes into the second half that they doubled their lead, through Sergio Aguero. We were handed a lifeline just before the hour when Ederson needlessly conceded a penalty that Anthony Martial converted to make 1-2.
That would prove to be our only shot on target all game as Ilkay Gundogan secured the hosts three points, five minutes from time when Nemanja Matic allowed the midfielder time and space around the six-yard box to tuck home.
Here are how our players fared:
David de Gea 6 – May feel he could have done better with Aguero’s powerful effort but otherwise David de Gea wasn’t given a chance with the other goals.
Ashley Young 4 – The right winger was exposed at right-back as Manchester City had a lot of success down this side.
Victor Lindelof 6 – Had a reasonable game at centre-back despite the scoreline. Can’t directly blame Victor Lindelof for any of the goals.
Chris Smalling 5 – Would probably have conceded a penalty and been at risk of a red card had David Silva not smashed home Manchester City’s early goal. Torn apart early on but got stronger as the game went on.
Luke Shaw 6 – A reasonable performance at left-back and offered something going forward.
Nemanja Matic 3 – Manchester City passed the ball around Nemanja Matic at ease as the Serbian was a statue in the middle of the park. Simply left Ilkay Gundogan walk into space outside the six-yard box to make it 3-1 when we were trying to push for an equaliser.
Ander Herrera 4 – Offered very little today and didn’t look after possession, especially early on when we needed to give our defence a breather as we were constantly on the back foot.
Marouane Fellaini 5 – Not a disaster in midfield and won the majority of his aerial battles.
Jesse Lingard 5 – Saw some touches down the right wing early on but otherwise Jesse Lingard had a quiet game as we couldn’t get the ball to him.
Marcus Rashford 5 – There was absolutely no supply to our striker who did his best to lead the line and close down the opposition, but ultimately didn’t test the Manchester City goal.
Anthony Martial 5 – Saw a lot of the ball compared to many of our attacking players, but did little with it.
Romelu Lukaku (35 mins) N/A – Won a penalty almost immediately after being introduced but was terrible in trying to hold the ball up afterwards.
Juan Mata (19 mins) N/A – Our hero midweek couldn’t produce the same brilliance today.
Alexis Sanchez (19 mins) N/A – Worked hard off the ball but barely ever touched it.
