Player Ratings: Juventus 1-2 Man Utd

Manchester United came from a goal down to score twice in the final five minutes to beat Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus on Wednesday evening.

The result keeps us in second place in our Champions League group with fixtures against Young Boys (home) and Valencia (away) to secure our place in the second round.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a cracking volley to give the Italian giants the lead on 65 minutes before substitute Juan Mata turned the game on its head. First, the Spaniard scored a delightful free kick with five minutes to go and then delivered the free kick into the box in the final minute that Leonardo Bonucci turned into his own net.

Here are how our players fared at the Allianz Stadium:

David de Gea 7 – Wasn’t given a chance with Cristiano Ronaldo’s volley and was only tested a couple more times throughout the match.

Ashley Young 7 – Rodrigo Bentacur wasn’t a huge factor down Juventus’ left as Ashley Young had a fairly decent game defensively. Also created a couple of chances at the other end when bombing forward from full-back.

Victor Lindelof 8 – Made a number of clearances as Juventus actually only had three shots on target all game despite having 55% of the possession and commanding a lot of territory.

Chris Smalling 8 – It was a good performance from our centre-back partnership as they held the Juventus attack out for more than an hour despite being on the back foot for large spells.

Luke Shaw 8 – Juan Cuadrado caused a few problems for Luke Shaw but they never led to anything. Our left-back saw a fair bit of possession as he got forward to support the attack.

Nemanja Matic 7 – Blocked a few shots but often struggled to win possession back for us in front of the back four. Tidy in possession though.

Ander Herrera 7 – Worked his socks off in the middle of the park but wasn’t too useful at breaking up the Juventus possession. Looked after the ball himself.

Paul Pogba 6 – A quiet game on his return to Turin.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Looked lively early on but faded badly before being replaced in the second half. Jesse Lingard saw little of the ball down the right wing as the game went on.

Alexis Sanchez 5 – Worked hard trying to lead the line but never got himself in any goalscoring situations.

Anthony Martial 6 – Looked determined to score against the side he was strongly linked to over the summer but failed to find the target with his efforts.

Marcus Rashford (22 mins) N/A – Saw few touches but was able to test Wojciech Szczesny once.

Juan Mata (13 mins) N/A – A man of the match performance in his cameo role as Juan Mata was able to score the equaliser and provide the cross for our winner despite only coming on in the 78th minute.

Marouane Fellaini (13 mins) N/A – Came on at 0-1 as a plan B but Marouane Fellaini barely touched the ball. Still, he can be considered a lucky charm as we won 2-1 in the end.
