Heading into the final two days of the January transfer window Manchester United have been linked to a number of signings for the second half of the 2017-18 season.
So far Alexis Sanchez has been the only new arrival to Old Trafford but since the Chilean superstar arrived from Arsenal last Monday, we have been linked to a number of central midfielders in particular.
This comes after Jose Mourinho switched to a 4-3-3 formation at Yeovil Town in our 4-0 FA Cup win on Friday night. Sanchez played on the left wing whilst 36-year-old Michael Carrick made his return to partner Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay in the middle of the park.
Carrick is in the final six months of his current deal at Old Trafford and is not expected to renew beyond this season. Marouane Fellaini is also in the same situation and is widely rumoured to be leaving the club in the summer too.
One of the central midfielders we have been linked to for a while now is AS Monaco’s versatile Fabinho. And now the Brazilian has confirmed he is looking to leave the defending French Ligue 1 champions, and is particularly eyeing a move to Manchester United.
The Brazilian international has made his name at Monaco over the past four-and-a-half-years in Ligue 1 since joining from Rio Ave in Portugal. He originally excelled as a right-back but has since been converted into a holding midfielder, playing a key role in helping Monaco to their surprise French Ligue 1 title win last season.
Fabinho was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer but Monaco refused to sell after letting a number of other key players leave and José Mourinho eventually brought in Nemanja Matić.
The 24-year-old has now reignited speculation over a possible move to the record champions of England after he confirmed he feels the time is right to leave Monaco to join a more ambitious club.
TeamTalk are citing quotes from Brazilian outlet Lancenet where Fabinho suggests he would jump at the change of joining a ‘prestigious’ club like Manchester United.
The Brazilian is quoted as saying:
“I would be happy to move to a more prestigious club like Man Utd with greater ambitions. My adventure at Monaco has been wonderful. I won a league title, but now I feel my time here is coming to an end.
“I am well aware of the fact the club’s objective is to finish in second place and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Of course, they look to do this by giving youngsters the chance to develop rather than spend big money on great players.”
Should Jose Mourinho be serious in his interest of Fabinho then he has little more than 48 hours to wrap up a deal for the two-time Brazilian international to play for us during the second half of the campaign. Otherwise, he could wait until the summer when we will be a couple of central midfielders lighter.
The report does suggest that Monaco rate Fabinho around the £45 million mark. At his age and with our financial resources this shouldn’t be a problem provide the boss sees his as a first-team regular.
The winter transfer window closes at 11pm on Wednesday 31 January.
