Manchester United have been handed big blow in their attempt to sign Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.
The Red Devils hope of signing the Germany international has hits the rock as the player has suffered a leg injury which could rule him out for weeks according to Daily Mail.
Jose Mourinho side were reportedly making plans to lure the 22-year old star to Old Trafford, but the winter move looks unlikely as the midfielder may struggle to pass a medical.
The Bundesliga club broke the news via their Twitter handle when they wrote.
‘Leon Goretzka has suffered a recurrence of the injury in his lower leg,’ the club’s official account tweeted.
‘In order to put these continuous and worsening pains to bed, Leon will undergo examinations over the coming days.
‘Until then, it is unclear as to when Leon will be fit to train and play once again. Get well soon, Leon.’
Schalke sporting director Axel Schuster added on Thursday morning:
‘Leon Goretzka had problems after the game against Cologne. We’re taking our time with him to make sure we get it right and to ensure we pinpoint the exact issue.’
Goretzka contract with Schalke ends in June , meaning he could join other club should the German club fail to reach agreement for a contract extension with him.
The highly rated midfielder is being sought after by other top Europe elite clubs including Juventus, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Arsenal.
The 2017 Confederation Cup winner was initially tipped to replace want-away Belgium star Marouane Fellaini in January.
