Paul Scholes surprised by Manchester United signing

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has admitted that he was shocked that José Mourinho was able to sign Nemanja Matić from rivals Chelsea.

The 29-year-old signed at the end of July for a reported £40 million fee from the West London club.

Matić signed a three-year contract with the Red Devils having seemingly lost his place in the Chelsea starting XI following the signing of Tiémoué Bakayoko from AS Monaco earlier this summer.

The Serbian international made his debut for the Red Devils in Tuesday’s night UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid in Macedonia, putting in a good performance.

Many were surprised by the sale of Matić including former-Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, who said the following on BT Sport:

“I really like the Matić signing. That was the one that surprised me a little bit. It made you wonder why did Chelsea sell him? I think he brings aggression to United’s midfield which is something I think they have been lacking.

“I think he’s very similar in a way to Michael Carrick in a controlling midfielder but what he brings and what Michael doesn’t bring is a little bit of aggression which, when he gets to the ball, he tackles, he allows other people to play.”

Nemanja Matić is expected to make his Premier League debut for Manchester United on Sunday when they host West Ham United in their 2017-17 season opener.

Matić originally joined Chelsea in 2009 from Slovakian side VSS Košice but only made two Premier League appearances before he was sold to Benfica in 2011.  The 32-time Serbian international then re-joined the Blues in January 2014 going on to win the Premier League in 2014-15 and 2015-16 as a regular in the first team.
