Mourinho Planning Audacious Summer Swoop

According Spanish outlet Don Balon ( as reported by The Sun), Manchester United are plotting to bring Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic to Old Trafford.

United splashed out a world record fee of £89 million to secure the services of Paul Pogba from Juventus this summer. The Red Devils expected instant returns from their new superstar but Pogba has so far failed to impress during his time at Old Trafford.

Many believe the Frenchman is struggling without a midfield partner who allows him to flourish as Andrea Pirlo did at Juventus.

Pogba’s best form has come when partnered by Carrick. The veteran midfielder is in the twilight of his career which leaves United searching for replacements.

Rakitic United’s Man?

Pogba needs a midfield partner who can dictate the play in the same manner as Carrick or Pirlo. If the reports from Spain are true, Jose Mourinho has identified Ivan Rakitic as the player to fulfill that role.

Rakitic has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world since joining Barcelona in 2014. The Croatian international is a key reason behind the Catalan giants’ domination of Spanish football in recent years.

Mourinho is an admirer of Rakitic’s abilities and is planning to convince the 28-year-old to swap the Nou Camp for Old Trafford.

Undoubtedly, Rakitic would be a very good signing for Manchester United. However, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome before a deal can be completed.

United will have to splash a lot of cash in order to tempt Barcelona to part with one of their key players. Even so, United’s financial strength means the club is capable of making the extraordinary offer to persuade Barcelona to sell.

The biggest challenge is to convince Rakitic to join a struggling United side. Barcelona is a club which routinely challenges for honours and leaving would be a wrench. Mourinho stated recently that it would take two more transfer windows to build a title-challenging squad.

It’s tough to sell a club in transition to a player with just six years left at the top. United will be relying on the glamour of their name and the manager’s persuasive tongue to seal the deal.
