According to reports from the Daily Mirror, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is set to drop Wayne Rooney for the clash against Arsenal.
Rooney has always been a player who is of great interest of the scavenging English media and while he previously used to grab the headlines for his exploits on the pitch, the striker has been courting the attention for all the wrong reasons in recent times.
The media have clearly been very critical of Rooney’s dip in performances over the last few years and recently, the 31-year-old found himself in hot water after enjoying a booze filled night out by gate crashing a wedding while on duty with the England national team.
Rooney acknowledged the mistake and apologized by releasing the following statement, “Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published. Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.
“Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both Gareth Southgate and [FA technical director] Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologise. He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures.”
However, Rooney looks unlikely to be forgiven anytime soon by the English media and now according to reports from the Daily Mirror, claims have been made that Jose Mourinho is also set to punish his captain by dropping him for the clash against Arsenal.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic to miss out in the clash with the Gunners due to suspension, it was believed that Rooney would be a certainty to start on the day for United but the Mirror state that Mourinho is planning to drop the troubled attacker.
Rooney did play very well during Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Swansea City ahead of the international break and it remains a mystery as to how the Daily Mirror were able to receive an insight into Mourinho’s potential team selection ahead of the clash.
