Ivan Rakitic’s agent Arturo Canales has played down speculation that his client is set to join Manchester United and has insisted that the Croatian midfielder will remain at Barcelona.
Rakitic who joined Barcelona from Sevilla back in 2014 has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks with Mourinho said to see the £185,000 a week star as his primary transfer target in January.
The 28-year-old only has two more years to run on his current contract with the club but it is understood that Barcelona are prepared to offer the midfielder a new improved deal in an attempt to keep him at the Nou Camp.
Speaking to the press Arturo Canales stated that Rakitic is very happy at the Barcelona and that he has no interest in leaving the club to join Manchester United.
He said: “Ivan is very happy at FC Barcelona, where he has been tremendously successful and has a contract with the club until 2019.”
News of Rakitic staying put in Barcelona will come as a huge blow to Jose Mourinho who had been looking to make a move for the midfielder in the January transfer window.
Rakitic’s superb passing combined with his excellent reading of the game makes him one of the finest midfielders in European football and is a player who would have undoubtedly strengthened Manchester United’s midfield.
The centre of midfield remains an area on the field which Mourinho is yet to fully address at Old Trafford. The signing of Paul Pogba has gone some way to fixing the problem but there remains a need for a player who is able to play alongside the Frenchman and with Michael Carrick heading towards the latter stages of his footballing career Rakitic could have been a perfect replacement.
Upon his arrival Mourinho stated that he needed specialists in specific areas across the pitch in order to take Manchester United back to the top and in singing Rakitic he would be getting just that. At twenty eight years of age Rakitic is arguably at the peak of his powers.
