Man United Suffer New Injury Blow As Star Is Ruled Out For Four Weeks, To Miss Seven Games

Manchester United have been handed a massive injury blow after defender Chris Smalling was ruled out for up to a month.

Smalling who recently came in for criticism by Mourinho broke his toe in training earlier this week and is now expected to miss United’s next seven games.

News of Smalling’s injury could not have come at a worse time for Mourinho who is already without first choice centre back Eric Bailly and with Phil Jones and Marcus Rojo left as the Portuguese’s only other alternatives at centre-back it may force Mourinho into signing another centre-back in the January transfer window.

It had been no secret that Mourinho had been looking to strengthen his backline over the summer and with Smalling and Bailly now set to face a spell on the side-lines the Portuguese could yet make a move for Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk.

The Dutchman has been in fine form for the Southampton this season and whilst the Saints are desperate to keep hold of their star man it is understood they would be willing to sell the defender should they receive a substantial offer for the player.

Van Dijk’s excellent tackling combined with his outstanding reading of the game makes him one of the finest centre-backs in Europe and is a player who would undoubtedly strengthen his defence.

In order for Mourinho to turn around his fortunes at Old Trafford he is need of players who are capable of stepping up to the plate and delivering the goods no matter how big the occasion may be and in Van Dijk he is a player who can do just that.

It will be no easy task luring Van Dijk away from St Marys but should Mourinho manage to convince the Dutchman to join up with him at Old Trafford in January he could go a long way to solving the Portuguese’s defensive woes for years to come.
