The End Of Smalling/Jones? Ed Woodward Working On £26m CB Signing For United

Premier League giants Manchester United are currently considering a swoop for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, according to reports from Portuguese outlet A Bola as translated by mirror.

Manchester United have endured a very difficult Premier League campaign so far and one of the main issues plaguing the Red Devils at the moment is their shaky looking backline.

The likes of Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Phil Jones have all featured in centre defence so far this season for United and perhaps apart from Bailly, none of the aforementioned players have managed to impress.

With Bailly and Smalling currently out injured for the foreseeable future, it is clear to see that United are very light at the back and many believe that United boss Jose Mourinho will be looking to strengthen his ranks during the upcoming January transfer window.

Naturally, the media have linked United with a host of players over the past few weeks and recently, it has been claimed that the Red Devils are currently plotting a move to secure the services of Benfica defender Victor Lindelof.

After a couple of years in the Benfica B side, Lindelof managed to break into the first team last season and has now managed to establish himself as the first choice centre back with a number of fine performances throughout the course of the last 12 months.

In addition, Lindelof has also become a key figure in the Swedish national team and is currently regarded as one of the most promising defenders plying their trade in Europe.

As a result, Lindelof has been attracting the interest of a host of top clubs and the likes of Chelsea, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have all previously been touted to make a move for the 22-year-old.

Now if reports from Portuguese outlet A Bola are to be believed, even Manchester United have joined in the race to sign the Swedish international and the Red Devils are allegedly planning to make a move for the youngster during the January transfer window.

Lindelof has a £26 million release clause currently present on his contract at Benfica and it will be interesting to see if United will be ready to splash such a sizeable amount to sign the promising but inexperienced defender.
