Paul Scholes picks his strongest possible Manchester United lineup
Club legend Paul Scholes has picked his strongest possible Manchester United lineup, omitting a number of high profile players along the way.
Manchester United currently possess arguably one of the most expensively assembled squads in the world football but despite their extravagant splurge over the years, manager Jose Mourinho currently seems to be struggling to put up a formidable lineup.
Mourinho has constantly chopped and changed his starting lineup throughout the course of the current campaign so far and while numerous injury problems most certainly have not helped matters, it is very difficult to ascertain United’s strongest starting XI.
Now club legend Paul Scholes has given his inputs regarding the current Manchester United squad and has revealed the starting lineup he would select as his first choice.
With David De Gea an undisputed starter in goal, Scholes explained that he would pick Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia as the defensive lineup, while the likes of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick occupy the middle of the park.
In the attacking positions, the duo of Antony Martial and Marcus Rashford were selected by Scholes, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Wayne Rooney would be the man leading the line for United under the tutelage of the 41-year-old.
Explaining his team to BT Sport, Scholes said, “Smalling and Bailly [centre-back] obviously. Luke Shaw when he’s fully fit – he’ll get in the team. Valencia has been a revelation [at right-back]. I’d have Martial and Rashford – the pace. You have to play those two and then it’s Ibrahimovic or Rooney.”
Scholes has omitted the likes of Juan Mata, Daley Blind, Marouane Fellaini and Jesse Lingard, all of whom have been regulars under Mourinho this season, from his selection but it has to be said the lineup which the ex-midfielder has chosen certainly looks very exciting.
