Henrikh Mkhitaryan is unlikely to aggravate his thigh injury after Manchester United refused to allow the midfielder to go on international duty.
Mkhitrayan was due to play for Armenia in the upcoming world cup qualifiers against Romania and Poland but will now remain in Manchester to continue his rehabilitation.
The Armenian football federation confirmed that they had received a letter from Manchester United stating that Mkhitaryan was still recovering from injury and that he wouldn’t be available for selection.
The 27-year-old hasn’t feature for the club since he was substituted off at half time during United’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City at Old Trafford last month.
News of Mkhitaryan staying put in Manchester will come as a massive boost to Jose Mourinho who has been without the midfielder for each of the last three league games.
The Armenian’s ability to unlock defences with his pin-point passing combined with excellent reading of the game makes him a real asset for Mourinho and is one which will undoubtedly strengthen his attacking options when he makes a return to the side.
Arguably the standout performer in Germany for Borussia Dortmund last term Mkhitaryan has yet to make his mark at Old Trafford but with news of the midfielder finally making a return this could be the moment were Mkhitaryan truly announces himself to the United faithful.
With Liverpool next up on the agenda for the club after the international break Mourinho will arguably face his toughest test so far he has faced as the new United boss. He will need to call upon players who he can fully trust to stand up and deliver when it matters most and in Mkhitaryan he has a player who can do just that
Able to play out on the flanks, in the centre of midfield or in the advanced number ten role Mkhitaryan can offer plenty of versatility to Mourinho and should the Portuguese name Mkhitaryan in his starting eleven against Liverpool his inclusion could prove to be the difference in United leaving Anfield with all three points.
