Manchester United will be looking to getting back to winning ways when they face Liverpool at Anfield after the international break.
Mourinho’s men could only manage a 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Old Trafford last time out and now sit five points off leaders Manchester City at the top of the premier league table.
With Liverpool next up on the agenda for the red devils we take a look at how United may line-up against the Merseyside club on October 17th.
The Portuguese is expected to stick with his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation against Liverpool with four across the back, two in central midfield, two wide men out on the flanks, one in the number ten role and a lone front man up top.
In between the sticks for United will be David De Gea. Liverpool have players in Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane who can all cause a real threat to United and the Spaniard will no doubt have to be on top form should he wish to keep them at bay.
At right-back Antonio Valencia is widely anticipated to keep his place in the starting eleven leaving out of favour Matteo Darmian on the substitute’s bench. The Ecuadorian has enjoyed a bright start to the new campaign thus far under Mourinho and will be looking to impress his new boss further when he takes to the field against Liverpool. In the heart of the Manchester United defence Mourinho is expected to partner Eric Bailly alongside Chris Smalling with Dutchman Daley Blind continuing in the left-back role.
Acting as the holding defensive midfielder Ander Herrera is likely to be given the nod over Marouane Fellaini and Morgan Schneilderlin. The Spaniard’s ability to move the ball on quickly combined with his outstanding work rate makes him a real asset for Mourinho and is one which he may well use against Liverpool. Alongside the Spaniard in the middle of the park Paul Pogba will be given the freedom of the pitch by Mourinho to do his damage. Pogba has endured a mixed start since returning to Old Trafford but will no doubt be hoping to be on top form when he faces Liverpool in two weeks time.
Out on the right hand side of midfield Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be handed a rare start by Mourinho. The Armenian has missed each of United’s last three league games through injury but should recover in time for the clash whilst on the left youngster Marcus Rashford looks likely keep his place in the eleven ahead of Anthony Martial who looks likely to start the game from the bench.
Playing in the advanced number ten role will be Juan Mata. The Spaniards ability to unlock defences with his pin-point passing combined with his excellent reading of the game makes him a real unique option for Mourinho and is one which the new United boss will no doubt use to his advantage against Liverpool at Anfield.
Leading the United attack will be Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede already has six goals to his name so far this season and will no doubt be looking to add to his tally when he faces Liverpool after the international break.
