Manchester United Scouts Sent To Watch 6ft 2 Tall Man City Defensive Target

Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Benfica youngster Branimir Kalaica after it was reported that the clubs scouts were spotted watching the defender play.

The Croatian only signed for the Portuguese champions back in June but has already attracted interest from a host of clubs around Europe including Manchester City.

Benfica are said to be desperate to keep hold of Kalaica but would be willing to sell the Croatian should they receive an astronomical offer for the player.

Having already sold prized asset Renato Sanchez to Bayern Munich over the summer Benfica will not want to lose another highly rated talented youngster to depart the Estadio da Luz.

It was no secret that Jose Mourinho had been looking to strengthen his defence throughout the summer. Having only brought Eric Bailly in through the Old Trafford exit door Mourinho still see’s room for improvement at the back and in signing Kalaica he would unquestionably strengthen Mourinho’s back four.

At just eighteen years of age Kalaica sands as one of the most promising centre backs in world football. The Croatian began his footballing career playing for Dinamo Zagreb before than making the switch to the Estadio da Luz back in June. His excellent reading of the game combined with his superb tackling ability makes him a real talent and one which a club like Manchester United will have no doubt kept an eye on.

For what Mourinho’s men have in numbers at the back they lack more so in real genuine quality. Since the days of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand the club have lacked a world class centre half in the heart of the defence and with Kalaica he could potentially solve United’s defensive woes for the next decade if not more.

Of course Kalaica at this moment in time remains a talent. Having only signed for Benfica a matter of months ago it remains to be seen whether Kalaica can make the grade in the Portuguese league and go on to establish himself in the Benfica side. The Primeira Liga is by no means one of Europe’s finest leagues but it will be a chance to see what Kalaica is all about and should he manage to become a success at Benfica then interest from not only Manchester United but other clubs will inevitably follow.
