With just a little under two weeks to go before Manchester United entertains arch rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford we take a look at how the blues may line-up against United.
With Sergio Aguero likely to be missing the game through suspension, City boss Pep Gaurdiola may opt for a more defensive 4-5-1 formation against Jose Mourinho’s men packing the midfield area and playing one lone striker up top.
In between the sticks new signing Claudio Bravo is likely to be handed a first team debut for the club ahead of Willy Caballero. At right back Pablo Zabaleta looks a near certainty to keep his place in the side after impressing against the hammers last Sunday. In the centre of defence with skipper Vincent Kompany still out injured, Pep is likely to hand former Everton man John Stones a start alongside Nicolas Otamendi whilst at left back Gael Clichy looks increasingly likely to retain his place in the starting eleven.
Given the likelihood of Pep going for a more defensive approach, the Spaniard may look to pack the midfield area in hope of limiting space for United’s attacking talent. Across the midfield he could select Ya Ya Toure, Fabian Delph and Fernandinho. That combination trio in the centre of midfield would look to win the key midfield battles and be looking to retain the ball possession at every given opportunity.
Out on the left hand side of the midfield David Silva will almost certainly keep his place in the starting eleven after enjoying a successful start to the new season. His link up play combined with his eye for goal makes the Spaniard City’s main attacking threat going forward. One on song there are few better footballers around than Silva and should United come out on top on September 10th they will no doubt have to keep the former Valencia man quiet. On the right hand side Raheem Sterling will look to continue to build upon his impressive early season form.
However it will be up front where all focus will be on. With Sergio Aguero likely to be ruled out of the derby Guardiola will hand a start to Kelechi Iheanacho. The 19-year-old is undoubtedly a highly talented forward but he does not carry that same fear factor as his team mate Aguero and with the Argentine missing City will be looking to the teenager to deliver the goods.
