One of the summers longest running transfer saga’s appears to be coming to an end as Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi looks set to be joining Arsenal after the Gunners reportedly had a bid of £35m accepted by Valencia.
The German international is set to undergo a medical with the Gunners and is expected to sign a four year contract with the club. News of Mustafi joining Arsenal will come as a huge blow to Manchester United who were reportedly keen on signing the German International before the end of the summer transfer window.
It has been no secret that Jose Mourinho has been on the lookout for a new centre back over the past few weeks with Jose Fonte in particular been linked with a move to Old Trafford. United may have plenty of strength in and amongst the centre of defence but for what they have in numbers they lack ever more so in real quality and in signing Mustafi he could have the answer to Manchester United’s defensive problems.
Chris Smalling is a very good centre back as is new club signing Eric Bailly but they are not in the same league as Mustafi and missing out on the German could prove to be a costly blow in United’s bid to win the Premier League Title this season.
Mustafi would have brought with him that world class quality that the United central defence has needed since the days of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. His all-round terrific defensive attributes combined with no nonsense tackling makes him one of the finest centre backs in world football.
At the age of just twenty four Mustafi is about to enter his peak years as a footballer. Having come up against some of the very best footballers that the planet has had to offer in Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in La Liga, Mustafi has shown that he is more than capable of stepping up to the plate and when it really matters on the biggest of occasions.
His experience not only at club level but at international level too makes Mustafi such a hot prospect in today’s game and in signing the centre-back it could prove to be a real masterstroke by Arsene Wenger.
Manchester United loss could be Arsenal’s gain and who knows at the end of the season, Mustafi signing for the gunners could make a significant difference in how the gunners seasons pans out. Whilst for United missing out on Mustafi may prove to be a blow in their bid to bring back the league title to Old Trafford.
