Jose Mourinho has taken a jibe at Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger stating that it will be very difficult for German International to play under him this season.
The 32-year-old was recently left out of Mourinho’s squad for the new campaign and whilst the former Bayern Munich star wants to remain at Old Trafford, the Portuguese wasn’t too optimistic about the midfielders prospect of playing with Paul Pogba, Maraoune Fellaini, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick all currently ahead of Schweinsteiger in the pecking order.
Speaking via his pre-match news conference yesterday, Mourinho admitted that it would be difficult for the Schweinsteiger to play this season confirming that he now his fifth choice central midfielder. He confirmed that he held talks with the veteran over his future and that he is more than happy for Schweinsteiger to remain at the club despite the fact he won’t be playing.
“I think it’s very difficult to happen.
“I’m not saying it’s impossible. I’m saying it’s very difficult.
“We have a decision completely made about (Paul) Pogba, (Ander) Herrera, (Morgan) Schneiderlin, (Marouane) Fellaini and Michael Carrick (Schweinsteiger’s fellow central midfielders).
“We have five players for two positions. It’s very difficult that an opportunity will arrive.”
“I cannot answer for him. It’s his life. It’s his career.
“He has a contract with Man United and has the right to make that decision to stay.
“That’s not a problem for us. Football is made of decisions. I did that all my career. Not just me, everyone does. Some players react in a different way and have other kind of decisions.
“Bastian is not speaking a lot. He gave this last statement, which he is completely free to do in an objective and polite way like he did. There are no problems at all.”
“I am quite surprised that Mr Rummenigge is not here now to take him back.”
Schweinsteiger’s future at United has been under intense scrutiny for some time now with the midfielder said to be attracting interest from a host of clubs around Europe.
However the German’s willingness to stay at the theatre of dreams may leave the club with a major problem. Schweinsteiger is reportedly one of Manchester United’s highest earners at the club picking up in excess of £200,000 a week and with him unlikely to feature at any point this season United would be paying a player an enormous amount of cash to someone that isn’t even playing.
Schweinsteiger joined the club last summer under former United head coach Louis Van Gaal but has struggled heavily with injuries. There is no denying that the German was once one of the finest midfielders on the planet but now at the age of thirty two Schweinsteiger is coming towards the end of his footballing career and is a player nowadays that just cannot be relied on.
Mourinho is building a Manchester United team to not only challenge but to win the Premier League Title this season and in Schweinsteiger Mourinho just doesn’t see him as part of those plans. In signing Paul Pogba the Portuguese now has his box to box midfielder who can cover both the defensive and attacking side of the game, whilst having Ander Herrera as his back up choice. Schweinsteiger was always that player who could excel in that role both club and country, however Mourinho now no longer sees Schweinsteiger as that man to do that.
Been summoned to play for the Under-21’s every week would be a sad end to what has been a glittering footballing career for Bastian Schweinsteiger. For both parties a move away would be the best option at this moment in time.
