Jose Mourinho has confirmed that midfielder Marouane Fellaini suffered a back injury during Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Hull City yesterday evening.
Fellaini was one of United’s standout- performers against the tigers at the KC Stadium and whilst he did complete the entire ninety minutes for reds, he was said to have picked up the problem after the final whistle. Early reports on social media ( that can’t be substantiated it must be said ) have it that the Belgian could be out for as many as 6 weeks.
The Portuguese revealed to reporters after the game that Fellaini’s back injury was a serious one and that Fellani’s defensive work in particular for the side will be heavily missed.
Marouane Fellaini’s injury setback will come as a massive blow to Jose Mourinho who had named the Belgian in every starting eleven thus far.
When Mourinho was officially announced as Manchester United’s new manager, it seemed Fellaini would be the first casualty of the Portuguese’s new reign and would be shown the exit door. However under the guidance of Mourinho the Belgian seemed a man who had been revitalized, a changed man and him missing from the Manchester United starting eleven will come as a huge blow to not only Mourinho, but for the entire United side too.
In United’s opening league fixtures against Bournemouth, Southampton and Hull City the Belgian has arguably been United’s standout performer on the pitch running things from the centre of midfield. For a man who had underperformed so drastically over the past three seasons his turn around had been nothing short of spectacular.
News of Fellaini’s injury may however give a chance to Frenchman Morgan Schneilderlin who has yet to be given a start by Mourinho. Schneiderlin has endured a mixed start to his career at Manchester United with the midfielder failing to replicate the form he shown for Southampton.
This may now finally be the opportunity he has been waiting for this season and it is an opportunity that Schneiderlin will no doubt be looking to take with both hands. With Fellaini expected to be on the side-lines for a while and with Michael Carrick edging towards the latter stages of his footballing career, Schneiderlin is likely to be called into the starting eleven to play alongside new club signing Paul Pogba. Should Schneiderlin take his chance it could re kick start his Manchester United career but should be fail to take his opportunity in the side he could be shown the exit door by Mourinho sooner rather than later.
As for Fellaini there has been no official confirmation yet on just how long the Belgian will be out for, however it is thought that the Belgian may be out of action for months rather than weeks.
