It seems inevitable that Southampton and Portugal star Jose Fonte will be signing for Manchester United this summer transfer window. According to new reports, Manchester United are willing to wait until the final day of the transfer window before making a move for Southampton skipper Jose Fonte.
Southampton are desperate to keep hold on to their star defender and have even offered the Portuguese a new contract to stay at the club, however it appears that Fonte has made his mind up and wants a move to united.
Fonte’ s future at St Mary’s has been under intense scrutiny for some time now, with united said to be right at the front of the queue for his signature and whilst Mourinho wants to bring Fonte to Old Trafford, he is no great rush to get the deal done rubber stamped.
Fonte still has two more years remaining on his current contract with the club and whilst Southampton value their skipper at approximately £15 million, United hope to conclude a deal for Fonte at slightly less than their valuation at twelve million pounds.
Should Fonte make the move to the theatre of dreams he would become Jose Mourinho’s fifth signing of the summer. Having already enjoyed a successful transfer window bringing in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly, Jose Fonte could become Mourinho’s final piece of his Old Trafford jigsaw for this season.
United may be somewhat strong in numbers at the back, but for what they have in numbers they lack in quality. Bringing in a player like Jose Fonte could prove a real difference in Manchester United’s bid to win the Premier League Title. An experienced and established head in and amongst the back four could prove to be a real asset for the club as the season progresses.
Despite now at the merry old age of thirty two, Fonte has shown that is more than capable of putting in top draw consistent performances on the biggest stage of all in the Premier League. If anything the centre-back has gotten better with age and in moving to Old Trafford it would give the Portuguese a fresh new challenge to look forward to.
Many have argued that Jose Fonte has always deserved a shot at the big time and should he complete a move to Manchester United by the end of the transfer window, this will finally be the chance to show the footballing world that he is indeed good enough play for one of the elite.
