Tyler Blackett has officially joined Championship side Reading, ending his fourteen year association with Manchester United. The 22-year-old has signed a three year deal with the Royals, who are currently managed by united old boy Jaap Stam.
Under Stam, Blackett is widely expected to be played on a more consistent basis and will no doubt be now looking to impress his new manager as he aims to kick start his footballing career once more at Reading.
Despite featuring for the Manchester United first team under former United head coach Louis Van Gaal two years ago (2014/15) the youngster has since struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford.
He spent the majority of last season out on loan at Celtic, but seen first team opportunities hard to come by for the hoops, limiting the defender to making a mere eight appearances in all competitions.
It had been thought that united were looking to loan out the defender in a bid to give him more game time, however after much thought Mourinho and his men have deemed Blackett surplus to requirements at the theatre of dreams and have instead let him go on a permanent basis.
Blackett has been with Manchester United since joining the academy all the way back in 2002. Having had numerous loan spells away from Old Trafford at the likes of Blackpool and Birmingham City, the youngster has never really looked like going on to make the grade at Old Trafford.
In recent weeks have seen the likes of Guillermo Varela, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Adnan Januzaj all leave the club on loan, as Mourinho clearly must have felt that they still had a future at the club, maybe not for this season but in years to come. However in Tyler Blackett’s case it is different story all together, he has sold him permanently and there is no way back.
There has been flashes of the evident potential he no doubt has, but the quality just hasn’t been there on a regular basis. With the club currently on the lookout for a new centre-back, they will have already looked at Blackett in pre-season and seen what he is all about as he was capable of playing in a variety of different positions across the back four. However in the end just like what all thought, Mourinho has come to the conclusion that he wasn’t good enough to play for Manchester United.
