Arsenal Told 6ft 2 Centre Back Is Going To Manchester United, Wenger Pulls Out

Arsene Wenger is ready to end his interest in Southampton defender Jose Fonte, with the Gunners said to be convinced that the Portuguese will be moving to Old Trafford.

Arsenal are desperate to sign a new centre-back after losing new club captain Per Mertesacker to injury earlier this month. Arsenal were said see Fonte as an ideal alternative should they fail to bring in Shkodran Mustafi from La Liga outfit Valencia.

Fonte has been attracting attention from a host of clubs from around Europe with Arsenal and Manchester United in particular said to be right at the front of the queue for his signature.

However in a latest twist, it appears that Arsenal have now withdrawn their interest in the Portuguese centre-back and are now looking at other options.

Fonte’s future at St Mary’s has been under scrutiny for some time now, with Southampton said to be desperate not to lose their star defender so late in the transfer window leaving the club little if any time to find a suitable replacement.

The Saints skipper still has two more years remaining on his current deal with the club, but is understood to be willing to move a superior club should he be guaranteed first team football.

With the Portuguese available for as little as £10 million combined with his leadership skills from the back and excellent defending ability, it comes as no surprise that other clubs are heavily interested in signing Fonte.

Since arriving at Southampton back in 2010 from Crystal Palace, Fonte has gone on to become one of the finest centre backs in not only in English, but European football.

Having been handed the captains armband back in 2014, Fonte has remained ever present in the Southampton side. His outstanding performances on the pitch have played a key role in the clubs rise up the Premier League table.

Should he make the move to Old Trafford, Fonte would finally get the chance to play for one of the so called bigger clubs. At the age of thirty two, this is arguably going to be the last chance Fonte gets to move to one of the big guns. It’s a stage he has wanted to shine on for years and now he will get the chance to do that.

Arsenal’s loss will be Manchester United’s gain and who knows at the end of the season, Fonte’s signing may prove the difference between United winning back the Premier League Title and not.
