It might seem a little ungrateful to be wondering aloud which player Manchester United could add to their arsenal this summer, given the quality of the four additions that have been made to Jose Mourinho’s squad so far, but that hasn’t stopped speculation on who United could bring in before the transfer window closes on August 31st.
Luckily, the Portuguese has already addressed four key areas already. Eric Bailly’s purchase from Villarreal addresses a lack of strength and quality at centre back, Henrikh Mkhitaryan adds skill and goals to United’s right, Paul Pogba brings strength, vision and pace to midfield, an area that has lacked in several areas for some time and Zlatan Ibrahimovic addresses one of last season’s key weaknesses; a lack of goals.
But where else could United strengthen?
The centre of defence is looking to be the most likely area for extra reinforcement, with Southampton’s Jose Fonte reportedly of great interest to Mourinho due to his experience and leadership. This seems to be United’s most likely addition before August ends, as the player is reportedly open to a move away from the south coast:
“United did discuss Leonardo Bonucci with Juventus when negotiating the Paul Pogba deal, but were put off by the likelihood of more protracted talks with the Italian club, while Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane also turned down a move to Old Trafford.
Fonte has been a steady presence in defence with Southampton and was particularly dependable in Portugal’s victorious Euro 2016 campaign, and sources say Mourinho is now willing to sanction a move.”
Fabinho is another defensive option at right back, and the Monaco player has been linked to United for the last two summers now. The Telegraph carried information on an updated bid for him via Marca last week:
“According to Spanish newspaper, Marca, Jose Mourinho has revived attempts to sign Monaco right back Fabinho in a deal believed to be worth €30m.
The Brazilian had been linked with a move to Old Trafford earlier on in the window, but Marca report that United have expressed their interest in signing the 22-year old.”
Again, a possibility but with Antonio Valencia performing well in the role, and Matteo Darmian able to deputise, it’s less than certain.
Santos’ Gabriel Barbosa is the only attacking talent on this list, with The Express reporting today that the Brazilian is close to deciding his future, with United and Chelsea reportedly vying for his signature after an impressive showing for his country in the Olympic Games this month.
Who knows, though? Given United’s start to this campaign, we might not see any further additions. Stay tuned.
