Jose Fonte is looking increasingly likely to join Manchester United this summer according to widespread reports.
Speculation surround the centre-back’s future at St Mary’s has been under intense scrutiny for some time now and bookmakers Ladbroke’s even have the Southampton skipper as short as 7/4 to sign for Jose Mourinho’s men and could be in line for a place on the bench, if not in the first eleven, for the match against Hull City this weekend.
Fonte has attracted interest from a host of cubs around Europe this summer with Arsenal in particular showing heavy interest in the player, however it appears that Manchester United may have won the battle for his signature.
Ladbrokes’ news man Alex Apati confirmed that odds on Fonte leaving Southampton had fell considerably over the past few days and that we may not have to wait too long before we see Fonte in a Manchester United shirt.
United are said to have made a bid of approximately £12m for Fonte and whilst Southampton want to keep hold of their star man, they are understood to be willing to let him go should the player ask for a transfer.
The Portuguese centre-back still has two years remaining on his current contract with the club and despite been happy at Southampton, he would be willing to move to Old Trafford should Mourinho guarantee him regular first team football.
If Jose Fonte arrives at the theatre of dreams he would become Jose Mourinho’s fifth signing of the summer. Having already brought on board the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly, the Portuguese is said to see Fonte as his final piece of the jigsaw, as he aims to bring back the Premier League Title back to Old Trafford.
Should Fonte leave Southampton it would bring to an end a seven year association with the club. Having joined the Saints from Crystal Palace back in 2010, Fonte has gone on to become an integral part of the Southampton side playing a key role in the club’s promotion winning campaigns from League One and the Championship (2011, 2012). His excellent form on the field led to Fonte been named the clubs captain back in 2014 where he has continued to lead by example helping Southampton climb the Premier League table.
However it seems Fonte’s time at St Marys is nearing an end. The Southampton skipper is expected to complete his move to Manchester United before the end of the summer transfer window and this begins a new phase in Jose Fonte’s career. For years Fonte has earnt himself a move to one of the biggest football clubs in the world, now he has a chance to prove to us exactly why he is worth all the hype.
