Jose Mourinho could be set to make Southampton defender Jose Fonte his fifth signing of the summer thus far as Manchester United Manager.
Reports suggest that Mourinho is eager to bring Fonte to Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window and that an official bid for the player is imminent.
The 32-year-old still has two more years remaining on his current deal at St Mary’s after extending his contract with the club back last October. Southampton do not want to lose their captain so late in the window, but are understood to be willing to let Fonte go should United meet their valuation for the player.
The Portuguese centre-back has been a revelation for Southampton since joining back in 2009. His superb leadership and quality defending at the back has played a key role in the Saints progression throughout the divisions over the years.
Despite Fonte heading towards the latter stages of his footballing career, the Portuguese still has plenty of football to offer and in moving to Old Trafford the best could be yet to come for the centre-back.
Mourinho stated upon his arrival he was looking to bring in four key players to solve the clubs problems and has thus far delivered on every promise he has made. A world class centre-forward check, a top notch midfielder check, a playmaker check and a young upcoming defender check. However there remains one key position on the field that the Portuguese hasn’t yet addressed and that area remains at centre-back.
In signing Fonte he would bring with him that vital experience needed, something of which the united back four currently lack. His knack of a goal scoring touch could also prove a real asset for the club this season. For years now since the days of Nemanja Vidic, Manchester United have lacked a real goal threat from the back and with Jose Fonte he would bring us just that. Having already bagged fifteen goals throughout his footballing career he would no doubt be looking to add to his goal tally should be make the move to the theatre of dreams.
Whether or not Jose Fonte moves to Old Trafford remains to be seen. However one thing cannot be denied, if the Portuguese is wearing the colours of Manchester United in September it would take the club one step closer to the bringing back the Premier League Title back home.
