Gianluigi Buffon: Why I Didn’t Say Goodbye To Paul Pogba

When Paul Pogba left Juventus for a world record fee earlier this summer, the majority of Juventus fans were sad to see him waving goodbye to the club. In addition to providing him a platform to showcase his abilities, Juventus provided Pogba with the necessary game time. Therefore, it was only natural that the majority of Juventus fans weren’t happy with his departure.

However, for a seasoned player who has spent almost 2 decades at the club, Buffon wasn’t sentimental with the decision of Pogba. Rather than criticizing him for his decision, Buffon has now stated how he said goodbye to the 23-year-old.

“For Paul clearly it’s easier to follow him on social media, so we know what he’s up to.”

Pogba had joined Juventus in the summer of 2012 for £800,000 – a transfer fee which was later ridiculed by Andrea Pirlo. As indicated by his price tag, Pogba was eager to leave Manchester United that Sir Alex deemed his behavior as un-respectful.

Leaving his miseries behind, Pogba was a sensation at Juventus from day one of his transfer. In his very first season at the club, Juventus won the Serie A with Pogba taking part in 27 of their League games. After his breakthrough season at the club, there was no looking backwards from the Frenchman.

While all of his 4 seasons were brilliant in Turin, it was his last season which epitomized the class of Pogba to the world. After the departure of Andrea Pirlo for the MLS and Arturo Vidal for Bayern Munich, the Juventus faithful were looking for a leader to grace the shirt. Like a true Champion, Pogba came to the fore and grasped the opportunity with both hands.

While they had started the 2016/17 season with 3 wins in 10 games, Juventus finished it with 26 wins out of the last 28. As a result, a season which started in an underwhelming fashion ended with a domestic double for the Old Lady.

As you might expect, it was the Frenchman who took the Old Lady from the cusp of disaster to their true status in Serie A.

Thus, while his departure from Juventus wouldn’t be acceptable to all its fan base, Pogba has paid back the interest which Juventus enshrined in him with a series of brilliant performances in the last few seasons.

Consequently, the response which Buffon has given to his departure was earned by the Frenchman with his brilliant performances during his time in Italy.
