Jose Fonte Could Become Manchester United’s 5th Summer Signing

Jose Mourinho could be set to make his fifth signing of the summer as Manchester United manager, after reportedly making contact with Southampton over the possibility of bringing Jose Fonte to Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old centre back has impressed for Southampton and Portugal in recent years and is said to be wanted by Mourinho, as he looks to strengthen the core of United’s defence.

Fonte is understood to be keen on moving to Manchester United, but it is thought that Southampton do not want to sell the experienced centre back this late in the transfer window, leaving the club with little time to find a replacement.

The experienced defender still has two years remaining on his current deal at St Mary’s, however given the age of Fonte it is unlikely the club will receive a substantial fee for the player.

With Fonte’s agent been Jorge Mendes, the same agent as united boss Jose Mourinho. A deal for the centre-back could take place sooner rather than later. At 32-year-old the Portuguese defender would add plenty of experience to a relatively young united backline.

In signing Fonte he may not necessarily be a regular first teamer week in week out, but he could still play a role in the Manchester United side, as Mourinho bids to bring the Premier League Title back to Old Trafford for the first time in three years.

Over the years Manchester United have lacked true experience from the back, since the departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra back in 2014. Fonte may not be Jose Mourinho’s first choice but in signing the Portuguese centre back it gives Mourinho an extra option to choose from at the back, an option that has a vast of experience.

One thing currently missing in the Manchester United side is an experienced centre-back and in signing Fonte he would give us just that. We aren’t going to kid ourselves and say he is better than what we have already got, because the reality is he probably isn’t, but he will for sure provide us with bagsful of experience that we have craved for many years.

It’s a signing that isn’t going to make you excited nor really make the rest of the footballing world sit up and take notice, however it’s a signing that needed to be made and one which could prove crucial in Manchester United’s quest for the Premier League Title.
