Dutch youngster Tahith Chong has officially joined Manchester United’s academy and will be available for selection in time for the reserves’ season opener against Derby County.
The club confirmed on their official website that Chong had completed his move from Dutch side Feyenoord in time for the game against the Rams.
The 16-year-old has been heavily linked with a switch to the Theatre of Dreams and had previously hinted earlier in the summer that he would be joining the Reds, taking to his personal Instagram account uploading what appeared to be a Manchester United cake with his name and number printed into it.
The winger has been reportedly attracting interesting from a host of top European clubs including the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea and his purchase is yet another sign of intent from Reds boss Jose Mourinho’s new regime.
Chong won the individual trophy for the best attacking midfielder in a recent youth competition (Otten Cup) over the weekend. United’s youngsters reached the final of that event, but lost out to Anderlecht on penalties in the final.
He was first spotted by Manchester United scouts at a youth tournament at United’s Carrington- based training ground last summer.
The youngster may only be sixteen years old, but he already stands at 5 feet 10 inches in height and with years of development still to take place the winger could yet grow into a powerhouse of a footballer.
Chong’s finest attribute is arguably his blistering pace and can use both feet well and is able to play on both the right hand side and left hand side of the wing. The exciting winger can also play through the middle as well and has a thunderbolt of a shot on him. Chong’s combination of positional awareness, pace and accuracy on the pitch makes him a unique asset for Manchester United.
His versatility could prove essential to united, having players that can play in a variety of different positions across the field is something of a rarity these days and with Chong been able to interchange positions from out on the wings to in the centre could prove valuable
The promising youngster becomes the twelfth Dutchman to play for Manchester United. He joins a list that includes, Arnold Muhren, Jordi Cruyff, Raimond Van der Gouw, Jaap Stam, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Edwin Van Der Sar, Robin Van Persie, Alexander Buttner, Daley Blind, Memphis Depay and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
