Manchester United’s incoming transfer business appears to be all done and dusted heading into the start the Premier League season this weekend. Of the 4 players that have made their way to Old Trafford this summer, Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are sure starters for Sunday’s match against Bournemouth, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan will likely make the bench, and Paul Pogba serves a one match suspension for picking up a booking in the Coops Italia in his last game for Juventus.
Attention has turned to the players who are likely to exit the club between now and the end of the transfer window, with Bastian Schweinsteiger almost certainly on his way but questions over a number of other first team squad members. Donald Love, Paddy McNair and Adnan Januzaj may have kickststarted United’s movement in that area, with the first two heading to Sunderland on permanent deals and the latter leaving on a year’s loan.
One player that doesn’t appear to be joining in leaving the club any time soon is Timothy Fosu-Mensah, with the Daily Mail reporting that the young Dutchman is on the cusp of signing a contract extension:
“United manager Jose Mourinho was keen to seal the 18-year-old Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford to underline his commitment to the club’s tradition of developing young players. An official announcement should take place in the coming days.
Fosu-Mensah impressed in his 10 first-team appearances for United last season under Louis van Gaal, making his debut as a substitute for Marcos Rojo in a 3-2 victory against Arsenal in February.”
This will surely delight a large chunk of United’s fanbase, purely because the former Ajax man looked such an exciting prospect when he featured towards the end of last season under Louis van Gaal.
His debut came as a substitute for Marcos Rojo against Arsenal before he was thrown in and the deep end as a centre back against Watford 3 days later, and coped impressively against Troy Deeney and Orion Ighalo.
Fosu-Mensah is the third of United’s brightest prospects to sign new contracts with the club in recent months, after Marcus Rashford and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson did the same earlier in the summer.
What’s perhaps most exciting about Fosu-Mensah is that he seems equally at home playing centre back or right back, having produced a notable, swashbuckling display in the first half of United’s game at White Hart Lane against Tottenham Hotspur last season. Indeed, United collapsed almost immediately after the 18-year old went off injured, and subsequently lost 3-0.
