Luke Shaw ‘doing great’ but Schweinsteiger unlikely to return this season

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal had good and bad news on the subject of injuries during his pre-match press conference on Friday morning.

Left back Luke Shaw has returned to training over the last few weeks after a horror tackle against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last September saw him suffer a double-leg break, and United boss Louis van Gaal offered an encouraging update on the England international’s progress.

Shaw is an outside bet for a place in the national squad for the European Championships due to take place in France this summer, and England manager Roy Hodgson will be heartened to hear that Shaw has been ‘doing great’ in his work with United’s physio.

Disappointingly, it appears that German captain Bastian Schweinsteiger is unlikely to feature for the club again this season after suffering medial ligament damage during a training session whilst on international duty last month. Schweinsteiger, a summer signing from Bayern Munich had only recently returned to the side after suffering a knee injury in United’s 1-0 FA Cup third round victory over Sheffield United.
