Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal lamented a lack of composure that he believed could have seen his side finish off West Ham United in their FA Cup quarter final replay sooner, but labelled the win that booked United a semi-final date with Everton ‘fantastic’.
Speaking to BBC Sport and MUTV, the Dutchman had this to say on United’s 1-2 victory: “It was fantastic – I am happy, I’m happy for the players, the club and the fans. Of course it’s a big result and I think we played very well. We played defensively very well – we didn’t give so much away. They lost the ball a lot of times and I believe with a bit more composure we could have finished it much earlier.”
After an up-and-down season for club and off the back of Sunday’s dispiriting 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Van Gaal was understandably happy to book a semi-final place. “The spirit in the team is very good, you cannot deny that. It was a fantastic result and I’m happy I shall go to Wembley as a manager.”
