Martial overlooked for PFA Young POTY award

Despite a highly impressive first season in English football after a widely scrutinised £36m summer move from AS Monaco, Manchester United’s Anthony Martial has not been shortlisted for the Professional Football Association’s Young Player of the Year Award.

Martial has racked up thirteen goals in all competitions since September, but that wasn’t enough to convince the PFA that the Frenchman was worthy of a spot on the list, which will certainly rankle United fans who have seen him provide electric runs on a seemingly weekly basis, and some exceptional goals this term including a superb solo effort against bitter rivals Liverpool in his first game in English football. Perhaps Martial will fare better at the club’s own awards ceremony, which takes place at Old Trafford next month.

The full list of nominees is:

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

Ross Barkley (Everton)

Jack Butland (Stoke City)

Romelu Lukaku (Everton)

Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur

Philipe Coutinho (Liverpool)
