Chris Smalling has praised Wayne Rooney after the forward continued his impressive start to the new year, by scoring the winner at Anfield last Sunday.
Rooney’s 78th minute goal against Liverpool was his fifth goal in 4 games for the club since the turn of the year and has looked revitalized ever since being dropped by head coach Louis Van Gaal back on Boxing day at Stoke City.
His 2 goals against Newcastle United, combined with winners against Swansea City and Sheffield United in the FA Cup at Old Trafford have transformed the forwards season around, having previously being heavily criticized earlier in the season for his admittedly below par performances.
Speaking to MUTV, Smalling said, ” Since that game, he has come back and shown he is a top class performer.”
” I think being left out can refresh you and spur you on a bit more, to prove to everyone just how good you are. Strikers go through periods when they don’t score but the best ones are those that come back and get on another run. Wazza has shown that throughout is career and its good to see he is amongst the goals again.”
