Wayne Rooney Ends Goal Drought As United Hit Three

United’s club captain has scored his first goal of the Premier League season after six domestic League games without finding the back of the net.

Rooney was assisted by in-form teenager Anthony Martial, who failed to find the net for only the second time in his five appearances for the club.

It came in United’s 3-0 victory over bottom-of-the-league Sunderland, which saw Memphis Depay and Juan Mata also adding to the score sheet.

Louis van Gaal’s side currently sit top of the table for the first time in over two years, following local rivals Manchester City’s shock 4-1 defeat at White Hart Lane in the early kick off.

The England captain had scored a hat-trick earlier this season when United travelled to Bruges for a Champions League qualifier.

Van Gaal said before the game that despite his captains goal drought, the Englishman was “still on for 25 goals this season.”

Following his goal today, Rooney will be hoping to kick on in United’s attempt to win the title, with tough opposition in Arsenal and Everton just around the corner.
