Having secured a season-long loan move to Borussia Dortmund, Adnan Januzaj can develop in the same way as £55m man Kevin de Bruyne, says Belgium manager Marc Wilmots.
Managing both players for Belgium, Wilmots believes that taking a step out of the limelight of Manchester United can help Januzaj flourish in to a world-class talent, in a similar way Kevin de Bruyne did when he moved from Chelsea to Wolfsburg.
“The step back from Chelsea to Wolfsburg worked wonders for Kevin De Bruyne.
“I am convinced that Adnan’s decision to join Dortmund on loan for one season is the right one. It will help him make the next step. Januzaj can enjoy a similar development to De Bruyne.”
Many were certain Januzaj would be staying at Old Trafford this term after stating his intent to fight for a place in the first team, despite facing stiff competition from Juan Mata, Memphis Depay and the ever-improving Ashley Young.
Wilmots believes Januzaj is a special player, and is excited to see how the young Belgian develops over the season.
“Adnan can play as a No 9 and on both wings. He has an amazing shot. I had never seen someone with such a shooting technique before.
“He can really hit a ball incredibly powerful from out of nowhere. I have already asked him once whether he has manipulated his shoes or the ball.”
Kevin de Bruyne spent two seasons in Germany before securing a £55m move to United’s rivals Manchester City, where he has started exceedingly well.
Januzaj was tipped to be United’s next start by former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, shortly before the Scotsman left the club.
The Belgian’s decision to gain first team experience elsewhere could turn out to be a fantastic one, as his recent form in a Dortmund shirt has been impressive.
