Following a breakthrough season last time around, Northern Ireland defender Paddy McNair is eager for more opportunities this term and encourages van Gaal to back him in the centre back role.
After making 18 first team appearances in the 2014/15 season, which also earned him a new and improved contract in February, McNair has only made one appearance this season, in last weekend’s 3-2 win over Southampton.
McNair came on in place of Marcos Rojo midway through the second half.
“I am just going to keep working hard now and hopefully more opportunities will come along for me.
“[The new contract] felt like a boost for me, it was a great feeling and I was delighted.
“The boss is a great manager, he has done so much in his career, so for somebody like that to support me gives me a massive confidence boost.
“I have a good relationship with him.”
Paddy McNair’s appeal for more chances in the first team are warranted, with United having started the season with Daley Blind in his position, who is usually more suited to a defensive midfield role.
However, Blind has impressed in the role, making it extremely hard for the youngster to break in to the side.
