PICTURE: The beautiful 45 pass build up for Juan Mata’s goal from United

There are many Manchester United fans around the world that when asked, what the highlight was from the 3-2 win over Southampton, would look directly to the brace from new signing Anthony Martial, or the fantastic saves from David De Gea to keep the reds in the match – But, one thing of beauty has almost gone unnoticed by many.

Juan Mata scored the third goal against Southampton on Sunday afternoon, but it goes down as a brilliant team goal which perfectly illustrated Louis van Gaal’s philosophy on the pitch.

After Memphis Depay’s shot hit the post, rebounding out for Juan Mata to stroke into the net, but this was after 45 passes were made without Southampton touching the ball.

The clubs attacking play has been criticised this season but there was no doubting the unbelievable quality of United’s 45-pass move that led to their third goal, a goal which proved to be the winner, Pelle grabbing a late 2nd for the Saints, but United held on to gain three-points and move into second place in the Premier League.

45 passes before finding the back of the net is fantastic, but it is not the most ever in the Premier League, sitting just behind Tottenham Hotspur who managed 48-passes before finding the net against Queens Park Rangers last season.

Pictured below, a graphic from Opta of all the passes before the finishing touch from Juan Mata, you can also watch the full 45-passes together in a video on the official website here:
