Louis van Gaal sat down with the media on Friday afternoon down at the AoN Training Complex to talk through his squad choices as we look ahead to Sunday’s fixture against Southampton at St Mary’s.
The first good piece of news, is that Wayne Rooney is back in contention for a first-team place on Sunday, after recovering from a hamstring strain which kept him out of the matches against Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven, LVG said:
“Wayne is fit to play. He’s only had one week out. It was because we weren’t taking any risks with him. Phil Jones has come back and trained with the group for the first time. He’s not match fit but he’s fit to train. Only Luke Shaw is injured.”
Louis van Gaal on Luke Shaw:
“I have to admit he was strong and firm. It was another look than the day before, so I was happy with that. But of course he knows that it is a long way to go for him. The operation was a good operation. It’s a great loss. I have said in advance of this season already that it shall be the season of Luke Shaw. He has started fantastically and everybody has seen that. Maybe he shall come back tomorrow.”
