Manchester United opened the voting for fans to decide the player of the year award via www.manutd.com. Fans are encouraged to vote for the top performers this season by 19th May. The three categories are;
Sir Matt Busby Player Of The Year
Recent winners of the award include Robin Van Persie, Javier Hernandez and the three time winner Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo who has won the award three times, more than any other player since the award was introduced in 1987/88. Last season David de Gea became the first United goalkeeper to win the award and he would be my choice to win the award again this season. He has been our highest performing and most consist player this season by a long way.
Goal Of The Season
This season we’ve scored plenty of important goals however we have been lacking in spectacular goals in my opinion. Juan Mata’s strike against Liverpool involved some great build up play and some incredible skill, as did Wayne Rooney’s goal against Aston Villa last month. For me Angel di Maria‘s chip against Leicester City is the goal of the season. This goal and di Maria’s early season performances provide me with hope that after a summer break and good pre season he will push on and make a big contribution in 2015/16.
U21 Player Of The Year
United’s U21 squad are currently going into the last few games of the season top of the league, two points ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand. This season there are three nominations for the award.
The first is Liam Grimshaw has been with Manchester United since he was 7 years old and played in numerous positions during his time at United. Although initially a midfielder, he often found opportunities at right back or at centre back, where performed well and usually with the captain’s armband on.
Donald Love found opportunities hard to come by in 2014/15 but forced his way into the Under-21 side in the second half of the season, often playing in a new centre back role.
I don’t claim to know very much about Grimshaw and Love so my vote for player of the year goes to Andreas Pereira. Andreas performances for the U21’s have been earnt him a place on the first team bench in recent months. Andreas has found game time hard to come by but after recently signing a new contract until 2018. Louis van Gaal recently stated “Andreas has all the attributes to become an integral part of the first team; great natural talent coupled with a good appetite to learn. ”
