Do Manchester United Really Need Cavani?

A lot of talk is going around the footballing world about the future of PSG forward Edison Cavani, considering his future in the Premiere League. That has raised his numerous link ups with different clubs including Manchester United. But do Manchester United really need the services of the Uruguayan hit-man?

Let’s start with the price. He won’t come cheaply which means United would need to splurge at least £60million pounds for his signature. It might be higher than that knowing United have the strength to spend under the financial fair play constraints.

Next, the play time. That’s where it all gets interesting. Cavani has been mostly played out of his favoured position in the current club to accommodate the big Swede Zlatan. His displeasure over the situation is no secret and he keeps dropping hints over his future. United can offer him the position and the hit-man role he has been looking for since leaving Napoli in 2012 summer.

United on the other hand are looking for a striker to replace Robin Van Persie, as per the reports and gossip columns all around. Van Persie, 31, is in his twilight years and his recent performances just back this sad news. Personally, I can’t imagine Falcao staying ahead of his loan and Chicharito too is almost out of Old Trafford. That leaves Wayne Rooney as the lone striker and rookie James Wilson to back him up.

The situation is very tricky for United. They need a 30 goal talisman in front of the goal for the next season in order to reclaim the English crown and also be serious contenders for Champion’s league. Cavani can provide the missing firepower and impact in front of the goal. United never really got a perfect Uruguayan to complete the unfinished business of Diego Forlan. Edison Cavani can be that man. If United can secure his signature before any other premiere league rivals, it would be a great signing.

Cavani is proven striker. He has been overshadowed at both club and national level by outstanding players. But nonetheless he is lethal when played in his favoured position, centre-forward and has shown that time and again. He can be a great signing for United who are looking to spend big again this summer. But there is a BIG if and that is Van Persie’s contract situation and Louis Vaan Gaal’s confidence in him.

United surely can afford Edison Cavani, but what they cannot afford is another debacle in front of goal.
