Manchester United has reportedly had a €35 million bid for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi rejected, per Sky Sports News. The Argentinian has been in fine form for the Spanish club, and has a €50 million release clause.
Valencia is also interested in United midfielder Darren Fletcher, also according to Sky Sports News. Should the interest be seen through, the two clubs can agree in a part-exchange deal for Otamendi, with Fletcher moved the other way as makeweight.
Otamendi is represented by consulting company Gestifute, run by agent Jorge Mendes. Mendes’ association with United is well documented, representing United players Ángel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Anderson, as well as former Red Cristiano Ronaldo. The connection between the agent and the club may help make the deal run smoother.
United are currently in the market for a central defender, having been linked with Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels. Otamendi might be the answer to United’s defensive issues, but the fact that the club didn’t brief the media much on the move might mean that the club is not confident that a deal can be reached.
