Player Ratings – Manchester United vs Southampton

David de Gea – Had very little to do and was helpless for the goal. (5/10)

Antonio Valencia – Started as right wing back and made some dangerous runs but his final ball was disappointing. (6/10)

Phil Jones – Had almost nothing to do for the entire afternoon, did make some runs forward but to little effect. (5/10)

Chris Smalling – Was United’s best defender on the day. A composed and commanding display from the former Fulham lad. (6/10)

Luke Shaw – A solid performance but like Valencia couldn’t make an impact with his forward runs. (5/10)

Daley Blind – Completed 90 mins on his return from injury. Kept it simple and was always on the lookout for a pass. Put in some juicy crosses in the second half. (6/10)

Michael Carrick – Was not at his usual best and couldn’t influence the game as much as he would have wanted to. (5/10)

Juan Mata – Really poor display in front of goal as he could have had a hat-trick in the second half. (5/10)

Wayne Rooney – Not upto the mark and has been off the pace for the last few games. (5/10)

Robin van Persie – Was subbed in the second half due to an ankle injury but didn’t make any telling contribution to the game before that. (5/10)

Angel di Maria – Really poor display as misplaced passes, wayward crosses and a heavy first touch was all he could manage on the day. Clearly not fully recovered from his injury yet. (4/10)

Subs –

Ander Herrera – Didn’t give the ball away cheaply and was much better than the other players on the pitch. (6/10)

Tyler Blackett – Replaced Shaw and looked lost and as he put in some useless long balls in the dying minutes of the game. (5/10)

Marouane Fellaini – Won quite a few headers as United started lumping balls forward to him in the last few minutes. (6/10)
